What is Initial Basic Training?

Initial Basic Training (IBT) is a mandatory training course that teaches basic riding skills to learner motorcyclists. It is part of the RSA’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) scheme and is intended to improve road safety.

What does IBT involve?
IBT for a small motorcycle category ‘AM’ or ‘A1’ – is a 16 hour course broken into four separate modules 1,2,3 and 4 which must be completed in sequence. Completing IBT for the first time on a larger motorcycle in category ‘A2’ or ‘A’ is an 18 hr course and involves completing three modules 1,3 and 5. These modules are a mixture of theory and practical riding skills. When you have completed an IBT module or the entire course, your instructor will record the details of your training in your logbook and issue you with a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion.
The Progression module.
If you want to upgrade the bike you ride (e.g. from automatic to manual or tricycle to two-wheeler) you can complete a progression module. This module allows you to get the training you need to operate a different type of bike without having to repeat the whole IBT course.
Finding an IBT course.
IBT courses are only available at RSA approved IBT training centres and may only be delivered by RSA approved IBT instructors.
IMPORTANT Before you begin your training, you should check that both centre and instructor are currently approved for the delivery of IBT. On the day of your training your trainer will be happy to confirm their continuing RSA approval. Only undertake IBT training once you are satisfied that your trainer still holds RSA approval. Training completed with an individual who does not currently hold RSA approval cannot count as part of your IBT and will need to be repeated with an RSA approved IBT Trai
ner.
